Under the Bombs is a selection from the Film Movement series.
Synopsis of the film:
"During a cease-fire in the Lebanon-Israel conflict of 2006, a Christian taxi driver brings an untraditional Shiite woman from Beirut to the heart of the conflict in the country's south. While they scour the rubble of local towns for her son, who was sent to live with her traditional family while she was staying with her husband in Dubai, they discover that despite their very different backgrounds they have much in common. And during their trip through the desolate countryside, the two travelers develop a deep bond as a response to the death striking all around them.
The film was shot entirely on location during the summer of 2006, in the middle of the ruins of war-torn Lebanon. Aractingi only hired two professional actors, the rest are real refugees, journalists, soldiers, etc..., playing themselves."

An Assistant Professor of Humanities at Anna Maria College, Dr. MaryKate McMaster will provide an historical overview of some locally prominent women from the 19th century, Friday March 19th, at 3 p.m. in the Reading Room.
This lecture is being presented during the annual recognition of National Women’s History Month. The overarching theme for March 2010 is writing women back into history. The history of women often seems to be written with invisible ink. Even when recognized in their own times, women are often not included in the history books. This talk will present lots of interesting information about women who have paved the way for equality and social change.
Part of the talk will review A Woman of the Century (1893), edited by Frances Willard and Mary Livermore, a groundbreaking book on women's biography. After a brief overview, McMaster will focus on the women who were born in Massachusetts, discussing different aspects of the MA women, based on her quantitative analysis of them. Some interesting women that Dr. McMaster will focus upon to illustrate her talk will include:
Clara Barton - teacher and nurse born in Oxford
Lucy Stone - abolitionist and suffragist from West Brookfield
Jane Goodwin Austin - author born in Worcester
Mary Agnes Dalrymple Bishop - journalist and teacher who lived in Grafton for many years
Lucy Newhall Colman - anti-slavery reformer and woman suffragist born in Sturbridge
Hannah P. Dodge - educator from Littleton who served as principal of the Oread Institute in Worcester
Abbie M. Gannett - author born and raised in North Brookfield
Mary Jane Holmes - novelist born and raised in Brookfield
Martha Elvira Stone - postmaster in North Oxford
as well as:
Louise Chandler Moulton - Pomfret, CT native and author
Marietta Stanley Case - author and temperance advocate from Thompson, CT
Ida Whipple Benham - peace advocate, Ledyard, CT native

Blamed by her contemporaries for the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty, please join Alexandra, the Last Czarina, as she shares her tragic story of love, her devotion to Rasputin, and her family's persecution, against the turbulent backdrop of the Russian Revolution of 1917.
Performed by Muriel Dyas in the Reading Room.
Muriel Dyas began sharing her passion for history two years ago with
various homeschooling affiliations. With much encouragement, she has decided to take her one woman show, called Historically Speaking, to the public. She has now begun performing for Councils on Aging, Women's Clubs and libraries. She hopes that each performance brings knowledge, empathy, and a bit of humor to the lives of the women she portrays.
